The drive: what to expect
From the airport your driver crosses the Canterbury Plains on SH75, then climbs and winds over the rim of Banks Peninsula — an old volcanic crater — before descending to Akaroa Harbour. It's around 90 minutes, with one of the best summit lookouts in Canterbury on the way.
The peninsula road is beautiful but winding — if anyone's prone to motion sickness, the front seat and a steady local driver make all the difference. We'll happily stop at the Hilltop lookout for photos and fresh air.
Ask about timing your arrival for an afternoon harbour cruise — the dolphins are often most active later in the day.
