1 Pre-plan your travel
The single biggest cause of airport stress is being underprepared. A few minutes of planning 48 hours before your flight eliminates most of it. Know your terminal, know your flight time, and know exactly how you're getting to and from the airport before the day itself.
- Check flight times and terminal information the day before — schedules can shift
- Download your airline's app for real-time flight updates and mobile boarding passes
- Prepare all travel documents — passport, visa, boarding pass, travel insurance details
- Confirm your airport transfer or parking arrangement in writing before you leave home
Sunshine Coast Airport is located at Marcoola, approximately 15 km north of Maroochydore CBD and 10 km south of Noosa. It handles both domestic and international services. New terminal opened 2020. Car hire, taxi rank, and pre-booked private transfers are all available at the terminal.
2 Pack smart
Inefficient packing is the source of more airport delays than most travellers realise — from overweight bags at check-in to liquids confiscated at security. A few habits make the difference.
- Use packing cubes to compress and organise clothes
- Weigh bags at home before leaving — domestic limit typically 23 kg
- Label luggage clearly: name, phone, address
- Put a contact card inside the bag in case tags are lost
- Liquids limited to 100ml per container in carry-on
- All liquids in a single clear resealable bag (1L max)
- Electronics in easily accessible pockets for security
- Valuables and documents in your personal item, not checked bag
- Medication in original labelled packaging — carry-on only
- Ear plugs, eye mask, light scarf or jacket for the plane
- Hand sanitiser and wipes (travel size)
- Noise-cancelling headphones for the terminal wait
- Chargers and a compact power bank (under 100Wh in carry-on)
- Download entertainment before you leave home — no wifi mid-flight
- Keep adaptors for international destinations in your day bag
- Screenshot or print booking confirmations as backup
Pack a separate small day bag or tote inside your carry-on. On arrival, move your essentials (phone, charger, book, snacks, water bottle) into it. You'll spend your first travel day comfortably without digging through your whole suitcase for every item.
3 Check-in & boarding
Online check-in opens 24–48 hours before most domestic flights and up to 72 hours before international flights. Checking in online saves time, guarantees your preferred seat selection, and gives you a mobile boarding pass so you never need to queue at the counter unless you have checked bags to drop.
- Check in online as soon as the window opens — earlier means better seat choice
- Store boarding passes in your phone wallet for faster scanning
- Arrive at the airport 90 minutes before domestic and 2–3 hours before international flights
- Have ID and boarding pass ready at every checkpoint — not buried in your bag
- Know your departure gate — it can change up to the hour of departure at smaller airports
MCY is a smaller airport and boarding closes earlier than at major city terminals. Most airlines recommend being at the gate 30 minutes before departure. If you're driving or using public transport, add buffer time — the coastal road approaches can slow during holiday season.
4 Navigate security efficiently
Security is where the most unnecessary time is lost. Experienced travellers move through quickly not because they're lucky — they've optimised their carry-on and their clothing for it.
- Wear slip-on shoes — removing and replacing lace-ups in a queue is slow and annoying
- Have your liquids bag in the very top of your carry-on for instant removal
- Put electronics in a separate bin — laptops and tablets must be visible
- Empty pockets before you get to the belt: keys, coins, wallet, phone
- Remove belts, heavy jewellery, and smart watches before approaching the scanner
- Know the prohibited items list — if in doubt, put it in your checked bag
Use one bin for your shoes, one for your liquids bag and electronics, and put your carry-on bag through last. This way everything comes out in the right order and you're not searching three bins for your laptop while the queue backs up behind you.
5 Comfort & health at the airport
Long check-in queues, delays, and terminal waits are much more bearable with a few simple preparations.
- Stay hydrated — bring an empty water bottle and fill it after security
- Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol before long-haul flights: both dehydrate
- Wear comfortable, layered clothing — airport terminals and aircraft cabins run cold
- Walk and stretch every hour on long flights — set a reminder if needed
- Pack healthy snacks for terminals — airport food is expensive and often poor quality
6 Travelling with children
Flying with kids is manageable with the right preparation. Most Australian airports have dedicated family lanes at security and family facilities within the terminal.
- Request a family lane at security — most major airports have them and they're faster
- Pack snacks, entertainment, and small novelty items the children haven't seen before — save them for the flight
- Carry extra nappies, wipes, and a change of clothes in your carry-on — checked bags can be delayed
- Board early when offered — families with young children typically have priority boarding
- Check whether your airport has a dedicated kids' play zone — MCY has family-friendly amenities in the terminal
Buy a few small inexpensive toys or activities and wrap them loosely before the flight. Unwrapping takes time and creates excitement — children who are engaged with a new toy are calm passengers. Even a $2 colouring book feels special when it's wrapped.
7 Sunshine Coast airport transfers — book before you fly
How you get to and from Sunshine Coast Airport is worth thinking about before the day of travel. The options available have different trade-offs on cost, convenience, and certainty.
Pre-booked transfers take one significant variable out of your travel day. You know the vehicle is coming, you know the price, and you know the timing is built around your flight — not the other way around.
Private transfer
The most convenient and reliable option for families, groups, and anyone with checked luggage. A private transfer from Sunshine Coast Airport meets you at arrivals with a name board, loads your luggage, and takes you directly to your hotel or home address — no stops, no other passengers. Fixed fares, real-time flight tracking, and complimentary wait time if your flight is delayed.
Airport Shuttle Services has operated Sunshine Coast Airport transfers since 1979. Fares start from $65 to the Maroochydore CBD, $89 to Noosa, and $149 to Brisbane. View our full Sunshine Coast Airport transfer page for all fares and online booking.

Fixed fares, flight tracking, meet & greet at MCY arrivals. From $65.
Taxis and rideshare
Taxis are available from the rank at MCY for unplanned travel. Rideshare is available but with limited driver supply compared to major city airports — wait times can be 15–25 minutes during busy periods. Neither option provides advance price certainty. For planned arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer is usually more reliable at a similar or lower total cost.
Car hire
Multiple hire car operators are available at MCY. Hiring a car makes sense if you plan to drive yourself around the Sunshine Coast during your stay — exploring the hinterland, driving to Noosa or Mooloolaba at your own pace. For airport-only transport with hotel-based stays, car hire plus parking fees often exceeds private transfer cost.
8 Final day checklist
A five-minute check the night before eliminates most last-minute panic.
- Confirm your flight is on time — check the airline app or airport website
- Confirm your transfer or parking arrangement is booked and you have a confirmation number
- Pack your travel kit: sanitiser, mask, wipes, snacks, water bottle
- Charge all devices overnight — phone, tablet, headphones, power bank
- Set two alarms — one for your intended wake time, one for your absolutely-must-be-up time
- Know the number of your transfer provider in case of any last-minute changes
