The Brisbane to Cairns distance problem

Cairns is 1,700 km north of Brisbane by road — a drive of approximately 20 hours even in optimal conditions. Nobody drives from Brisbane Airport to Cairns for a holiday. The realistic options are flying (2 hours, multiple daily services) or combining transport modes for specific situations like one-way car relocations or extended road trips that are a purpose in themselves.

This guide is primarily for travellers who are flying into Brisbane Airport from international or interstate connections and then continuing to Cairns — whether on the same trip or with a stopover — and for visitors who land in Cairns and need to understand their ground transport options in Tropical North Queensland.

Flying — the only realistic option for most travellers

For 99% of travellers, the answer to "how do I get from Brisbane Airport to Cairns" is: fly. The BNE–CNS route is one of Australia's busiest domestic corridors, with Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar all operating multiple daily services. Flight time is approximately 2 hours. Fares vary widely — from around $89 on Jetstar advance deals to $300+ for last-minute Qantas flexible fares.

If you are arriving at Brisbane on an international flight and connecting to Cairns, allow sufficient connection time. Brisbane Airport's domestic and international terminals are separate and connected by an airside transfer for passengers with checked luggage checked through. If you're not checked through to Cairns, allow at least 90 minutes between your international arrival and your domestic departure — more if you have checked baggage to collect and recheck.

💡 International connection tip

If you're flying internationally into BNE and then connecting to CNS, ask your international carrier whether they can check your bags through to Cairns at point of origin. This avoids needing to collect and recheck at Brisbane and can significantly simplify your connection. Not all airlines offer this — check before you fly.

Driving — the scenic option for a specific type of trip

Driving from Brisbane to Cairns is a legitimate road trip — through the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, the Whitsundays, Townsville, Mission Beach, and finally into the tropics at Cairns. If you have two to three weeks and want to experience the Queensland coast, it's a remarkable journey. The Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns is approximately 1,700 km, best split over three to five days of comfortable driving.

What it is not is a practical way to get from Brisbane Airport to Cairns quickly. The drive takes 18–22 hours of driving time, typically spread over multiple days. For a trip that's primarily about reaching Cairns, flying is always faster and usually cheaper when you factor in petrol, accommodation en route, and vehicle hire.

Car relocation services occasionally offer heavily discounted (or free) one-way hire from Brisbane to Cairns — worth checking if you're flexible on timing and happy to drive specific vehicles on specific dates.

Ground transport once you're in Cairns

This is where most travellers need the most help. Cairns Airport (CNS) is 7 km north of the Cairns CBD — a very short distance — but Tropical North Queensland is large, and the destinations beyond Cairns (Port Douglas, Palm Cove, the Daintree, Kuranda, Atherton Tablelands) require additional ground transport.

Cairns Airport to Cairns CBD

The shortest and most common transfer. Private transfers from Cairns Airport to the CBD start from $55 — a 10-minute, 7 km drive. Taxis are available at the rank. Rideshare is available but limited in Cairns compared to major cities. The Sunbus route 1 connects the airport to the city but is infrequent and not recommended with luggage.

Cairns Airport to Port Douglas

Port Douglas is approximately 75 km north of Cairns Airport (~55 minutes via the Cook Highway). This is one of our most popular regional transfers — Port Douglas is a premium resort destination and the gateway to the Daintree Rainforest, Mossman Gorge, and the Low Isles reef area. Private transfers from Cairns Airport to Port Douglas start from $129.

Cairns Airport to Palm Cove

Palm Cove is 25 km north of the airport (~20 minutes) — a boutique beach village with luxury resorts strung along the esplanade. Popular for honeymooners and upscale reef and rainforest packages. Private transfers from $79.

Cairns Airport to the Daintree

The Daintree Rainforest — the world's oldest tropical rainforest — begins north of the Daintree River ferry, approximately 150 km from Cairns Airport (about 2.5 hours). Transfers from $249. Pre-booking required. Note that mobile coverage is extremely limited north of Mossman and zero beyond the Daintree River.

Wet season vs dry season — it matters

Tropical North Queensland has two seasons that affect travel significantly. The Dry season (May–October) is the main tourist season — lower humidity, clear skies, excellent reef visibility, and the period when most international visitors arrive. July and August are peak months; book transfers well in advance.

The Wet season (November–April) brings heavy rainfall, high humidity, and occasional cyclones. The Daintree road north of the river can become impassable in heavy rain. Box jellyfish make ocean swimming dangerous without a stinger suit. The upside: waterfalls are at their most spectacular, prices are lower, and crowds are absent. Road transfers during the wet require local knowledge — our drivers know the conditions and will advise if a destination is inaccessible.

⚠️ Wet season road access — the Daintree

During heavy wet season rain (typically January–March), the road north of the Daintree River ferry can become impassable. The road to Cape Tribulation is unsealed beyond the ferry and can wash out. Always check current road conditions with RACQ before booking remote Daintree transfers during the wet season.

Practical tips for BNE → CNS travellers

Book Cairns ground transfers before you land

During the dry season peak (July–August), Cairns Airport transfer availability can be tight, particularly for Port Douglas and the Daintree. Book your CNS transfer at the same time you book your flights — don't leave it to the airport.

Flying from BNE to CNS vs international connection

If you're flying internationally into Australia and your final destination is Cairns, compare fares for BNE → CNS connection vs flying directly into CNS from your international gateway. Some international carriers (notably Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines) have coded connections to CNS via their Australian gateways. It's worth checking whether a direct connection is available rather than assuming Brisbane is the right gateway.

Consider a BNE stopover

If you're flying from the UK, Europe, or North America and arriving exhausted after 24+ hours of travel, spending a night in Brisbane before flying to Cairns the next morning is a legitimate strategy. Brisbane Airport has good hotel options on-airport and a 20-minute private transfer to the CBD. A night in Brisbane rested makes the Cairns experience significantly better.

Cairns is not a destination you drive to from Brisbane — it's a destination you fly to, and then use well-organised ground transport to reach the reef, the rainforest, and the destinations north. Getting the ground transport right is the difference between a smooth tropical trip and a frustrating one.
